JUNETEENTH 2020

This Juneteenth, let's celebrate the resiliency of the human spirit...

I celebrate Juneteenth within the context of present-day America. Slaves in Texas received the news of Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, a year late. It was a document that declared all slaves free to experience life, liberty, justice, the right to move about freely, the right to pursue and exercise political and economic freedom, the right to pursue happiness, and the freedom to enhance their intellect. To experience life without shackles!

As I approach the 2020 celebration of Juneteenth, I am once again haunted by the reality that what we celebrate as African Americans and other Americans in general is the illusion of freedom. In my opinion — we, all of us, are with shackles.
